I have an audition coming up where I need to have the usual (two contrasting monologues, etc, etc) but I would like to have my classical monologue be something other than Shakespeare, and I have been researching several different plays in search of some good monologues. I was thinking that some of you might have some favourites that you could share. I am looking for a classical non- Shakespearean monologue that is on the more lighter/comedic side for someone who is around twenty years old....so if anyone has any that fit the bill, I would be so grateful to hear any suggestions! Thanks!

Well finding a classical piece that fits you should be your biggest concern. Im a big fan of Moliere, because I love his take on politics. The Misanthrope has some great gems in it.
William Congreve is good.
I love She Stoops to Conquer! Wonderful funny play.
Look at some Ben Johnson stuff too. There's so much out there, it would be hard to just pick one!

"Tis a Pity She's a Whore" has some pretty good ones. The story is like "Romeo and Juliet" but it's a brother and sister. It was written sometime in the early mid 1600's.

I've also seen a fair amount of Oscar Wilde and even Shaw offered as Classical pieces, so if this is something like a grad school audition, be very clear on their expectations beforehand. If this is simply your choice of contrasting pieces, you can be more creative in your choice. Don't forget the Greeks, they invented the biz... though I think the first musical was actually Og and Thok in 'I'm on Fire' in the Neanderthal Theatre Center.

Its not for a grad school audition, so I have some leeway in what playwrites and plays I choose from. Thank you everyone for your wonderful suggestions! I will be hitting the plays tonight that you suggested to see if I can scrounge up a couple of monologues I like!
