I went to the Primary Stages EPA and the next day got an email with the subject "Welcome to Primary Stages!"

When I opened it, it appeared to be a mass email from their literary manager. It said:

Hi there!

You auditioned yesterday for Primary Stages Associate Artistic Director Michelle Bossy, who suggested you might be interested in hearing more about our Summer acting classes. Take a look before, and if you have any questions, feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email.

Look forward to meeting you! Have a wonderful day! (the sun feels so good today!)

Then there was a link to their class schedule.
When I auditioned I didn't ask about classes and wasn't auditioning to be admitted to their classes. Did anyone else who went to this EPA get this email? Looks like it may have been sent to everyone.

Hope it doesn't become the norm for EPAs to become places to scout actors to sign up for classes.

i had two NYC friends tell me about the exact same thing. one said the turn around from her appt to the email was only about 2 hrs, like, the auditioner turned in email addresses during the lunch break and a mass email went out.

i wonder how "legal" this is. i think the same happened to me when i last auditioned for them (probably 2.5 yrs ago). if you are unhappy, report it to keith at the audition center immediately. don't know if any rules or ethics were broken, but can't hurt to complain.

OOoo, not good. I have been to a Primary Stages EPA in the past and this did not happen. Please do alert someone at AEA. I do not think this is allowed.

Hi all! So sorry that our email felt at all inappropriate. As you may know, we began our Primary Stages School of Theater a couple years ago and have received tremendous response from the acting and playwriting community through word of mouth and grass roots efforts. We have also received many inquiries at EPAs for information on our school and classes and began to send emails to those participants. Your recent postings have inspired us to provide an opportunity for actors and playwrights in our studios to “opt-in” to receive such information rather than just sending an unsolicited email. We hope that this measure will prevent the distribution of unsolicited information in the future. I also notified Keith Howard at AEA of the situation and our plans to remedy the issue. Thank you all for taking the time to audition for Primary Stages productions and for bringing this situation to our attention. Many thanks. Elliot Fox, Managing Director.

Dear PrimaryStages,

Thank-you for remedying this situation. Please take a moment to try and understand how demoralizing what you did feels to actors. They are going to a job interview (EPA) and then are solicitated by the employer to pay to train for the job they are seeking.

EPAs can be rough enough. I have found I try to avoid ones where some young, bored intern is sent who just seems to want to get through the day since there is no way in hell that company is hiring through EPAs. That was my experience at a Primary Stages EPA a while back. I would have been horrified to have received an e-mail when I got home asking me to take classes.

Dear PrimaryStages,

Thank you for acknowledging and remedying the situation. If the email had only gone out to those who requested information about the school it wouldn't have been seen as a problem. Hopefully the EPAs will be used for their intended purpose.

exactly, camille. that is exactly the sentiments one friend had.

"i went to an audition for a job, and got an email regarding classes. is my acting so bad that all they want me for is classes and not acting?"

i think i remember feeling the same way when it happened to me a while back.

to the person who wrote from PS... you basically stole email addresses for your marketing purposes. you should know that that action is illegal according to the law, not just according to possible rules according to AEA. actors include their email addresses for CASTING purposes via their resumes- receiving sides for callbacks, and for contact sheets once cast in a production-

NOT to go to an audition and be told that they should be taking classes instead.

talk about making people feel bad about themselves in an already stressful situation...

Thanks, Americangirl. I hope the Primary Stages people read this, although I have a feeling they won't.

Wow, I can't believe Primary Stages would pull that. That's kinda low.

Wow!!

I cant believe with as many "working actors" they work with they are still doing this!

I had this happen at a CD workshop I did with them awhile back. The owner of the networking place was HORRIFIED that they sent out the blanket email. He worked out a deal that we all got free tix to one of their productions. I had a frigging fantastic audition that night, and thought I was making a good first impression, when I received the email, I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. Made me happy that someone in charge knew that this was not good!

I also hate when I audition for a production, and I'm all of sudden on their mailing list for every event they have! Granted, I go to a lot of theater, and do keep tabs on companies I want to work with, but I wish it were up to my discretion who's mailing list I end up on. I agree, I audition for a job, not to fatten up an organizations mailing list.

It's good that folks our speaking up! When we respect ourselves, others will follow suit!
