I had an audition and it went well. My audition invitation was based on a pre-screening, by invitation-only process.
The producer/director told me that he could see me in two of the three lead roles. Later that day, a collegue of mine auditioned, and was told that I "did great" and that they were considering me for "X" role.
I made the mistake of NOT asking what the next step was, if they were considering me. I just found out that they now holding a new audition in a few weeks.
I know that one should never read into what they think they hear, or third-person stories, but do you think that necessarily means that I am off their list? Should I show up to their other casting call, or just wait it out?
I know that most of the time, you never hear back, but given that the original audition was pre-screened and by invitation, and what the director had said, I naively took it as having a good chance.
I have already sent the director a thank-you. Should I just wait and see, or is there an action I should take?

I thought so. I didn't think so much that I was special, but I wanted to make sure that I did/said what I should have, outside of sending a thank-you.
For the next time, is it appropriate (at the end of the audition) to ask what the next step is?
Thanks!

Nope! Just say thank you and leave. If they offer more information that's great, but don't expect it. For commercials, be sure to check on the wall in the waiting area for any callback dates that might be posted. Other than that, don't expect much else. As CS said, just move on to your next audition.
