I'm especially interested in casting calls for children for my daughter. I tried to look at the casting notices on BackStage, but found out I have to register and pay a fee to subscribe. Same with other sites like Explore Talent and New Faces. Is it really necessary to pay fees to just see lists of casting calls? Are there any sources to see audition notices without paying?

Some of these sites, like Backstage, Actors Access, and NYCastings are legitimate. The nice thing about AA is that you can join and only pay if you submit. You can try it out for a while and they see if it's worth it to do a subscription.
Stay from sites like Explore Talent -- there are many posts on this board about them; try the search function. Total scam, they often have stuff that is expired and lots of no-pay garbage you can get for free elsewhere on the web. I've never heard of New Faces, maybe someone else on this board has.

Thanks Dramamama. I'm a pretty skeptical person and tend to be tight fisted when it comes to paying out $$ for questionable benefits. Plus, it seems to me that there are very few "good" listings for kids under 13 on these casting call sites. I'm not against letting my daughter do a non-paying job just for the experience. But much of the student or short films I see listed deal with subject matter I wouldn't want my daughter exposed to or even remotely connected with. Thanks for your always helpful advice!

Just to agree with dramamama. I signed up on explore talent for the "Free" trial and new within 5 seconds its was bologna. This website has helped me in lots of ways. I can't speak for AA or NYcastings but i do know that lots and lots of people are happy with it. If your from DC check out actorscenter.org. You get discount classes, tix, and expos.
