Are there rules as to how many call backs a child actor is asked to return for? If they are equity, are they paid? If they are put on hold, what does that mean in terms of other work or compensation?

Take Jackie's advice and call. But, I can say that there is no set rule on the number of callbacks for any audition, whether it's theatre, film or TV. It can be anywhere from no callbacks for a booking to several. It just depends on each production company and if they find what they are looking for during the first audition or after months of casting.

MIB, is there a limit to the number of callbacks you can be asked to do without pay?

There may not be any rules for how many callbacks for any project but there are provisions for pay after so many hours for auditions in some of the equity contracts listed on line. My son is SAG and AFTRA, not Equity. There is definately rules for pay after so much time at an audition in SAG.

I was asking out of curiosity since it seems the amount of call backs and the time kids are required at some of these auditions seems over the top.

I also wanted to know what it really means if someone is "on hold" for a broadway show from a financial and commitment standpoint. If you are "on hold" without a contract, can you do other work?

It depends on what ever contract the production is being run under.

for example...a production contract: Auditions and/or readings, excluding initial interviews/auditions,
shall be limited to four in number for an Equity performer and said
performer shall be compensated at the rate of one-eighth of
minimum salary for each reading and/or audition over four, to which
the performer is called. The above numerical limitations and
payment shall not bperformers.

It all varies on the contract. go to the actors equity website and if you know what contract it is under, look up the rules and check.
