Does anyone know what is up with this casting? There is another open call coming up next week but they have been having auditions since July. Shouldn't this be cast already? Does anyone have any info/insight?

It looks like, from the notices that just went up, that they've decided to look for types that might not necessarily come from within the "theatre community," so I guess they just haven't found it yet.

However... I thought I remembered an announcement a while back that said Mary Jane had been cast. Does anyone else remember that, or did I totally make it up (which is absolutely possible)?

ok, they prob want genuine rock singers with presence instead of a trained singer trying to sing a rock song. I am the latter, so I guess I gotta smoke a pack of ciggs and drink a few shots of whiskey before I go. haha, jk. (My voice teacher will KILL me if she reads this!)

"Julie Taymor has dismissed rumours Evan Rachel Wood has been signed up to star in her new Broadway show Spider-Man."

News to me.

Also didn't realize she's Jewish; it never occurred to me since her dad runs the annual production of A Christmas Carol in Raleigh.

I don't know...Julie Taymor has been known for kind of sliding on the truth.

She stated when she was filming Across the Universe that it wasn't a "Beatle's musical".

Um....then why all the Beatles' songs set to a story? Barely words said, everything done in song and in Beatle song? That defines musical and a Beatles one at that.

So it's not a biography on them. But that's not what Ms. Taymor was asked. See all in the semantics and all.

Uh-huh.

Julie Taymor did not say that Evan Rachel Wood was out, the person writing the article made that conclusion based upon the casting notice. Evan Rachel Wood thinks she is still in the role - there is a You Tube video from a few weeks ago with an interview of her telling us she is playing the role and going into rehearsals in June. I guess someone needs to tell her she didn't get the part Smiler

I find it odd that the casting notice for Monday's audition is identical *word for word* to the one that was released last July. Same three openings. They could have at least changed it up a bit!!!

Maybe if the kids are lucky, one or two will get a break in some form.....but really....Does anyone believe a production of this magnitute (One of the most heavily invested productions on Broadway to date) has any intention of giving a lead to a non-equity person with no stage experience and/or following?

Question: Are false pretense casting notices a legitimate tactic devised to create hype prior to ticket sales? It seems to be surfacing that this may be the case with another non-union production involving teens. Is it possible that our kids are being exploited for media purposes?

My understanding is that they are required to post precast roles for Equity notices only, not non-equity.

Any feedback from some of the vetran actors would be greatly appreciated!

this call is extremely frustrating since logic would say it is already cast but you never know. I am gonna tomorrow go anyway and will let everyone know how it goes! Best!

Having worked in several casting offices, I can say that the majority of these huge casting calls are publicity stunts and for just seeing new talent.

Yes, people have gotten work out of them. For example, at last year's "Spiderman" open call, a girl was found who they liked a lot and was brought back in as an understudy when next to normal went to DC and i assume she transfered with the show to broadway. It is the casting offices ways of seeing new and undiscovered talent.

That being said, you should only go if you do in fact fit the descriptions. It's a great way to get seen.

Thanks for the insight, Brian! I did go, and upon seeing morning news cameras, figured that most of this is a publicity stunt. That enabled me to go in there with no pressure and have a pretty decent audition. Smiler

they are auditioning in LA this week, seattle washington, and in texas! they are either going through all expenses to put out a grand Stunt, or they really haven't cast it yet. it's expensive (both in time and money) to have this many open calls.

so i dunno...
