Hello. I've auditioned twice in NJ. The auditions take place in large stadiums and your seat tickets are given to you a few days before the audition. I suggest getting there the first day VERY EARLY to get a decent seat number because you audition according to your section and seat number. The day of the audition you have to be there at a certain time (I think by 9am) and you can't leave the building until you are finished. The day of the audition you get to your seat and you sing a portion of a song they will have you prepare (this is for the show-they have each city sing a different song- you can use this time to warm up or you can jut lip synch and rest your voice. You will hear people utterly screaming for no reason). There will be cameras for this part only, then they are required to leave the audition space. After that they will quickly set up at the center of the stadium 12 long tables with divisional curtains. Each section gets called down and 4 or 5 people will stand in a line at each table and each person has only a few seconds to sing. And I mean A FEW SECONDS to make a GREAT IMPRESSION. Choose your song wisely. They will either stop you, allow you to keep going, or ask for additional material. The first audition I sang maybe three lyrics before I was cut off and the second time they let me sing a half a song before asking for another one, so make sure you have a really good hook. I suggest taking a friend with you because the amount of people there can be really overwhelming and you will be waiting around for hours, most likely. I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!!!!
