"Can a little boy play 8 shows a week?" According to equity, yes, one child can play 8 shows a week. It is completely up to the creative team. If it is a particularly demanding role, (i.e. Billy Elliot), then they will cast more kids. But for some shows, like "Grey Gardens", they felt that the children were mature enough and the roles weren't demanding enough to cast more than one per role. Here is an article from playbill.com where someone asked a question about kids on broadway. http://www.playbill.com/features/article/116495.html

also, theatre and camera work is very different. with theatre, from what we are following on our tour (internationally), the kids do have restrictions. i can't remember the exact layout of the rules, but they are only allowed so many blocks of time of "work" (which includes school hours) during a week. so on days off, the kids will bank school hours so they are more free for other things, such as performing. but theatre is different for sure. on camera work can last 12 hr days. theatre, except tech days, that never happens. rehearsals are usually 8 hrs and performances themselves are likely in 4 hr blocks of time, so there isn't as much a need for time off. but there are labor laws for theatre, but not as specific or strict as on camera work.

I know people were asking about theater, but I just want to set the record straight about on camera work for kids...kids can't work 12 hours! Adults might be on set for 12 or more hours, but not kids. For AFTRA and SAG projects (and technically, all on camera projects) there are very specific work hours and turn around times. The hours are based on age and are different for school vs non-school days. Our productions have always followed the CA laws. Here are some school day examples: 6 - 8 yo - total time at location = 8.5 hours 4 hours max work (including hair, mu and wardrobe and travel from base to set) 3 hours education 2 hours r&r 1/2 hour meal 9-15 yo - total time at location = 9.5 hours 5 hours max work (including hair, mu and wardrobe and travel from base to set) 3 hours education 1 hours r&r 1/2 hour meal In our experience, 2nd ADs (they are responsible for wrangling the child actors) were working with set teachers to keep track of these times to the second! It is correct that kids can bank education hours, but they are only allowed to bank an additional hour per day. Info on specific entertainment industry work hours for kids can be found here: http://www.bizparentz.org/california.html
