this is not really answering your question, but it's funny...
when i first saw posts about this show, i thought it was some sort of play version of the rated R film "thirteen" with evan rachel wood and holly hunter. and i was horrified that parents were sending their young kids to audition!
ha. now i know better. google's fun.
also, do a search on playbill. they might have the info.

Rehearsals were supposed to start July 28th from what I heard. Don't know if it is true. Some people on the board have children in the show I believe - they might be able to answer that for you. It is supposed to be a show that will have a lot of replacements as kids start to look older. However, no one can really say how long it will be on Broadway. First, it has to get there, and then it has to bring in the bucks to stay open.

they premiered Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World up at Stagedoor Manor this session. JRB came up to critique it and then came to the show on Friday night july 25th. while he was up there, he also auditioned kids for 13 and some kids got callbacks for nyc....quite a few boys - very talented. so i guess they are still looking.
the musical director for spring awakening was up as well auditioning kids for the show (you had to be over 15) and lots got callbacks for that as well.

Slightly off topic... I was in the book store today and saw that "13" has a hardback book for sale. I read the jacket and it is the storyline from the musical. Not sure if it was just newly released, it was in the "new' section, or it could be that I am just the last to know!
