Just a small question:

If you have done numerous student films, various training for a couple of years and you're sending out headshots and resumes in mass mailing and you get 0 response, is it safe to say that your headshot isn't working?

I'm reading a lot of posts here with people getting at least some kind of response...so I'm just wondering what you guys are thinking.

This isn't as "small" a question as it seems.

It is of paramount importance to every actor. There are so many variables that determine successful submissions however, that it can be an extremely difficult question to answer. Not having enough acting credits would be a common obstacle in getting roles or representation.

When seeking the most simple answers however, I always look for the most obvious mistakes, and at the top of the list of mistakes that most actors make, sending out bad headshots would be chief among them.

Acting (both stage and screen) is an extremely visual business. Sending out cheap and unflattering photos are among the most common-- and simple to fix-- of all marketing/promotional problems for actors.

Get a great headshot and see for yourself what it can do for your career. Without one, you'll never realize your true potential.

agreed with robert on this one. who really knows?

could be you have less than stellar photos.

could be you don't have enough credits.

could be you are trying to do a mailing at the tail end of the busiest audition season in NYC and agents are busy as heck confirming jobs and contracts for their current clients. maybe wait until may or june and do another mailing or a follow-up. their clients are heading out of town, they'll be rethinking their current client list, they'll be not quite as busy.

could be you are of a highly populated type (specifically those in the 14-25 yr old caucasian- which is always my problem) so unless you have an amazing headshot, a referal, or some awesome credits, you will probably get looked over if you are in that category.

could be a million other things. maybe you trained a place that the agent hates. maybe agent saw one of the films you did and didn't like it. could be that they love you but don't have a spot for you right now.

these other people having luck could be in a much less populated type, could be that they really did their research and knew who to contact. could be that they have awesome credits and matching headshot.

who knows? just keep trying Smiler

Why not post your picture here and get some feedback? An effective headshot is extremely important in an actor's career.
