Some actors have successfully used post-it notes attached to the headshot side of the h/r, listing the name of the project and the role they are submitting for. If you choose to do this, make sure your contact numbers are on your resume.

I would think that post its would be a bit dangerous to use and they can get easily misplaced.

Yup, I agree, but I know people who use them all the time. I think like with almost everything else, it comes down to personal preference.

That so very true. I can't see myself using it but if someone else wants to, more power to them.

As an independent filmmaker (please see my profile for link to my imdb listing), I'd like to give an opinion on cover letters. I have reviewed thousands of pics/resumes and I can tell you that a cover letter is NOT necessary. I rarely read them. There's very little information that needs to be a cover letter that is not already (or should be) in the resume. As a director, I don't want to be told what part you want. I want to look at your picture, and decide for myself.

Also, most letters are so full of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes that they do more harm than good.

If you must say something, say something strong. Most letters come off sounding a bit desperate. In my 25 year career, I remember perhaps one letter, where the actor wrote one line: "I am John (where John was the character's name)." I liked his confidence, and called him in. I don't know if it would have had the same effect on my on another occasion.

I hope this helps.

Ron,

Thank you so much for your helpful input on cover letters. It's nice to have an insightful POV from an industry professional who is on the receiving end of submissions.

Be sure to PROOF your work!

One of the most important things in writing cover letters and resumes as a professional is to make sure you always pay attention to detail, especially when it comes to
SPELLING! If you expect an agent, casting director or industry professional to take you seriously as a professional, then you need to take your spelling seriously!

Here's a thread with some of the most common spelling mistakes. Please feel free to add to the list.
