If you are mailing a head shot and resume.. Confused

1) Should you print your resume on actual resume paper?
2) Should you include something else in the envelope, such as a piece of cardstock, to help your photo from bending.
3)Do you write "do not bend" on the envelope?
4)Could you print your resume on cardstock?
5) Do you need to staple your resume to your headshot if you're mailing it?
6) Can you send more than one picture?

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or recommendations when mailing headshots and resumes?

Sorry for all the questions... I'm obviously a newbie at this! Thanks in advance Big Grin

Hi!

1) You can print on normal printing paper and then staple it to your headshot (so, yes to question #5) and cut the paper down to fit the headshot.

2. Yes, cardstock can help. I am sure there are numerous actors on this board who have interned for CD's who can tell you what shape a headshot ends up in after being through the mail, because I never have been on the receiving end.

3. Yes, write "please do not bend" on outside, although the woman at my Post Office said it isn't as effective as a piece of cardboard.

4. I guess you could but make sure it doesn't smear. It would probably save you money to just use paper.

5. already answered

6. If you are submitting for a specific role, just use one (you really want to target your type)

~Hope this helps. I am relatively new, too, so any more advice would be greatly appreciated!

1. What the hell is "resume paper?" You print on regular white printing paper. You will need to either take a ream to a copy shop and have them cut it down to 8x10 or you can cut it yourself by getting a good sliding blade papercutter (guillotine style doesn't always cut straight).

I DON'T recommend printing on the back of your headshot. One, the ink will smudge on photopaper. Two, if you're so desperate to, you will have to downgrade to lithos, a lower quality type of headshot. Three, when you print a resume on the back of the headshot, it becomes dated.

2 and 3. No need for cardstock. That's just going to add weight to your envelope, thus making you pay more for mailing. Headshots don't get mailed with small things like bills, letters, postcards, etc., so it's NOT going to be bent and folded to fit into the same mailbox as those small things.

4. Why the hell would you print on cardstock? You print your resume on plain white paper, cut and fit it to 8x10 and staple it to the back of your headshot.

5. Yes, you need to staple it to the back of your headshot. When you audition, do you hand the casting director a separate resume and headshot? NO! So why should you do anything differently? What if they lose the resume that has your contact info on it? Now they don't know how to contact you with just your headshot.

6. If you feel that sending one shows off your wide range then YES!

I know it's a bit off topic but are there any examples of a resume for like beginner actors with no credits other than acting classes?

I've already showed you what to do if you don't have credits but training.

If you have no credits you follow this example http://bbs.backstage.com/eve/f...=407101291#407101291 but looking like this:

At the top and centered:
Name (Centered and is largest in font size)
Union affiliation (if any)
CELL Phone Number
Email

Left side under the top and centered stuff:
Height
Weight
Hair color
Eye color

Training
Skill learned/School or teacher/Location (LA, NY?)

Special Skills/Abilities
Be creative with this. When I was starting out and interviewing with agencies, they would usually go straight there and talk about my special talents and even had me demonstrate some of them.

how do you all make your resumes?
what software?
Do you staple your resume only once at the top left corner? I heard double sided tape was good too...

I use Microsoft Word. ALWAYS in the 3 column format!

Once at the left hand corner?! That reeks of UNPROFESSIONALISM!

I like to staple my resume to the back of my headshot twice. Some people say four staples, but two is enough. I staple where the border and photo meet so the staples aren't very visible-one at the top center and one at the bottom center.

I don't like glueing or using adhesives to attach the resume because a serious actor is constantly updating his or her resume. Staples are easy to remove and to restaple in the same area.

'Resume paper' is just another new and expensive concept designed to part actors from their money.

It's simply regular paper pre-cut to 8x10. I called it a "rip-off" on another thread, and I haven't changed my mind.

I think what the poster may have meant by resumé paper may mean what professionals use - a higher quality cotton based paper.

Since cotton is stronger than wood pulp paper, it holds the ink in incredibly well without fading.

Paper money, for instance, is printed on cotton paper.

Resumé paper, while nice, may not be worth the investment if you are mass mailing your headshot and resumé.

I always use the cheapest ream paper I can find, then have it laser-cut to 8x10.

Only put your hard-earned money toward things that will move your career forward.

Remember my saying: "The paper isn't important, it's what's on it."

Thanks everyone! I've been sending resumes on good ol' regular paper and I'm glad that seems to be the norm. I don't want to spend $$ on paper if I don't need to!
