I noticed there are many photographers posting on this board, and I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share the type of camera you use, and if anyone has experience with a Canon 40D. Many thanks.

It's more the glass. 40D is a good camera. What lenses are you using? L glass is as good as it gets (for Canon shooters). I shoot with a 5D, the MkII will come in time.
Canon 5D (5DmkII in a couple weeks!) Canon 1N (film) A variety of "L" lenses, but portrait work is done almost exclusively with the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS
Yes the glass is important, but not as much as it was with film. The film camera is merely a vessel that exposes film but the DSLR is actually processing your shots as well.
I use the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS and an 85 f/1.2 as well(tack sharp).
Blaneyphoto: wait until you see the difference between the 5D and the 5D MKII! Awesome!
I still use the Canon Rebel XTI. I haven't found the need to upgrade to the 40D or higher yet. I use an 18-125mm lens but upgraded to a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG lens. Haven't got a chance to use it yet.
Thanks so much for your replies. I just have the kit lens (28-135mm IS), so I think I'm going to rent a 85mm f/1.2L II to take my headshots. You can rent one for $60/week online, much cheaper than buying one since I'm just doing this for my own pics.
p.s. rgp, that's awesome that you got the Canon 5Dmkll. Maybe I'll get one when I win the lottery..

I use a Nikon D200 with a 50mm or 85mm lens. I love, love, love the creamy bokeh I get with my 70-200 f/2.8, but I'm a really chatty person and like to be up close to who I'm shooting, so I don't use it all that often.
Wow, I meant to say I upgraded to the Canon 18-200mm IS lens.
And I actually just checked out the 50D. I am using this camera while my XTI is getting serviced. Although I find the 50D a bit more finicky on the AF I am considering keeping the camera. Going to make my decision this coming week.
