My daughter will be getting her headshots done this summer. My daughter goes through several hairstyles in a month, braids, weave and short curly hair. Should we get a headshot done in her natural short hair and a headshot done with her hair long(weave)?

She needs to look like her headshot, whichever you choose.

I recently contributed to a similar thread called, "Hair??" My response is re-printed, below:

"My advice for hair is simple.

Wear it the same as you appear in your headshots. Although some like to feature many different hair styles in their photos, I find the practice often problematic, simply because you have no idea what photograph the CD called you in on -- was it straight or curly? Up or down? Casting people are generally seeking specific looks, and anytime you come in looking far differently than your headshot, I don't view it as a positive."

That being said, I believe that featuring an alternate hair style can often be extremely beneficial, dramatically changing your daughter's appearance for potential roles that she heretofore would not be seen as "right" for. But as long as you can determine WHICH headshot the casting director received, you're in good shape.

Choose hair styles that best define your child's age and lifestyle, with particular care given to her facial shape and contours... you want the hair to suport and flatter, not the other way around. Always select do's that are quick and easy for you to duplicate when time is short...

Although hair styles change like the weather, you'd be better off in the long run to try and narrow your child's choice of a favorite hair style to just ONE defining cut, two, max... often times easier said than done!

"Whatever works."

Thanks for the response. She's 18 so she thinks she know's it all, I will show her you reply. She has a serious decision to make because whatever hairsytle she chooses she will need to stick with it for a while.

When they're eighteen, OF COURSE they know it all!

If you'd like, I'd be happy to offer my advice... just post your jpegs right here (Photo Bucket is a good free site to upload your child's pictures to), or feel free to email me.

Hi Robert

I sent you an email with the pics. For some reason I couldn't download them to this post. I liked your work on your webpage. I will be calling you this summer to set-up a consultation about my daughters headshots.

Rita lost a commercial because the production company kept an old photo from which they called her BUT she had changed her hairstyle.

We had sent newer pix that they had not kept.

well i am just breaking into the business and shopping around for the best headshots ever.. i met with a photographer that advice me to wear my hair in braids. reason being is , this is my choice of stlye for the last ten years. which in term is the "real me", which is what i understand they are looking for out there. As an African American women i feel this will open the doors for many biases in terms of the roles i will be booked for. What do you think?
