Here is an email from a recent client who flew in for the day for his new headshots.

He is an attorney who wants to explore acting.

He lives in Amsterdam.

If you think that Backstage is seen only in America, you don't understand the global reach of the Internet.

Could you kindly inform me as to your availability on the morning of

when I saw this in the Crate and barrel 2 catalog, I just HAD to put it here.

a tattooed girl IN a major retail chain's catalog, and she isnt covered up, AND shes a GIRL.

and shes a photographer too !

I thought oh Roberts gonna love this ! Wink

This really goes to show that being tattooed no longer remains in the relms of society's rejects and hookers and sailors...

that tattoos have hit the mainstream of society and is more and more accepted every day !

CB2 is a MAJOR retailer of Home furnishings and their stuff isnt cheap. If being tattooed was still as bad a taboo as robert still believes, this image would never have been published.

Times changed robert, society have changed. perhaps now you can be accepting of tattoos ?

Of course there are opportunities out there for people with tats. Noone is saying otherwise. Generally though, people on Wall Street, lawyers, stockbrokers- really any business where a suit is required- tattoos will be a problem. I come from the corporate world- about ten different companies to be precise. Not ONE allowed visible tattoos. Kind of a bummer in Vegas where tipped employees can make a LOT of money, well it would kind of suck to have to not get that job as you just HAD to have a neck tattoo or what not. My little itty-biity rose on my hip which I acquired when I was 17 has even cost me when I was pursuing modeling gigs. Try being a Vegas showgirl with a back tattoo. Show me some photos of corporate employees with visible tattooos and you may have a shot at not sounding like you are debating just for fun and have something to back it up. And the girl in the picture? I think that looks really, really bad. I would walk out if I had an appointment for headshots and she showed up. I walked out of an interview the other day as when I arived, there was this guy with gang-like tattooos down his arm. Not professional looking at all. I might post my old manuals from when I worked for all those companies and it clearly states in black and white "No visible tattoos." Imagine having to where long-sleeves in Las Vegas or Arizona where it is 100-120 degrees!!! But ya gotta cover them. Cops certainly have to cover tattoos and they are outdoors in that heat!!! You would melt for sure. Makeup will SWEAT OFF.

Miss Stone, I am guessing you are 40-50 years old ?

I am saying that TODAY tattoos dont matter really, check this out, 10 seconds of photoshop using the healing tool. and her shoulder tattoos are gone. I didnt even pixel peep.

So if that little itty bitty rose you got when you were 17 cost you a number of modeling gigs, you must be talking out of the past.

in 1987, Thomas Knoll created photoshop and photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990. that was 18 years ago.

what you said about corporate america, Yes, Visible tattoos are a not accepted with more of america's more traditional firms, but when dressed in corporate garb, the only thing that shows is hands and neck and face.

Even the most hard core tattoo fans dont do their hands, neck and face. Sure a couple of people got neck tattoos I know of and it looks rather silly and it shows outside normal clothes that is their choice, but that is not the norm for tattoos.

some people tattoo their face, pierce their noses all the way and stretch their earlobes to fit a banana through. but that is the extreme end of things...

Thats just your own opinion of stigma. I would have no issues with her as a headshot photographer at all. I do not judge indiviuals based on their appearances alone, you seem to do that.

just because she has tattoos you would walk out on a session ?

that shows you lack tolerance for people different from you.. how do you feel about homosexuals ? Ethnic groups ? short people or people with disabilities ?

Its hard to open your eyes if you lived most of your life in a time when tattoos are the symbols of what they were at the time. but times changed, tattoos are more mainstream than ever, and the girl with it is young, she isnt from your generation when tattos are the marks of bad people.

the world is ever-evolving. you gotta keep up with current things, living in the past when society around you changes is not the best for you.

YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, SAGAFTRA!!!

THANK YOU CRATE AND BARREL, FOR MAKING EVERYONE BELIEVE THAT BIG TATTOOS ARE NO LONGER JUST THE DOMAIN OF BIKERS, DRUGGIES, GANG MEMBERS, JAILED CRIMINALS AND ROCK STARS! IT IS NOW PERFECTLY COOL, HIP, AND ACCEPTABLE -- EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME!! YOU DON'T NEED TO HIDE OR DISGUISE THEM ANYMORE!!!

IN FACT, I JUST CALLED MY GIRL AND WE'RE BOTH GOING TO A TATTOO PARLOR IN THE EAST VILLAGE TONIGHT TO GET MATCHING TATS, JUST LIKE THE ONE ON THE PRETTY MODEL CHICK SITTING ON THE EXPENSIVE DESIGNER FURNITURE INSTEAD OF THE BACK END OF A HARLEY. THE TATTOO JOINT IS HAVING A "TWO-FOR-ONE" SALE TODAY. COOL.

SHE'S GOING TO GET A GREAT BIG ONE SAYING "ROBERT KIM PHOTOGRAPHY" ONE HER CHEST, JUST TO SHOW HER DEVOTION, AND I'M GOING TO GET ONE ON MY BACK THAT WILL READ: "I NOTICED A SLICK ADVERTISEMENT IN A MAJOR RETAIL CHAIN CATALOG THAT LOOKED SO COOL THAT IT TOTALLY ELIMINATED MY MISTAKEN DISLIKE OF BODY INK, AND THIS TATTOO IS MY PERMANENT TRIBUTE TO THE ADVERTISEMENT THAT CHANGED MY LIFE."

IF THERE'S ANYMORE ROOM LEFT, I'M GOING TO WRITE SOMETHING ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE ABILITY OF THE MASS MEDIA TO MAKE EVERYTHING FROM DRINKING A CERTAIN KIND OF ALCOHOL, TO SMOKING A CERTAIN KIND OF CIGARETTE, TO USING A CERTAIN KIND OF LIPSTICK, TO DRIVING A CERTAIN KIND OF AUTOMOBILE WILL MAKE US BELIEVE THAT IT WILL SOMEHOW MAKE US LOOK YOUNGER, COOLER, SMARTER, HIPPER, OR MORE SUCCESSFUL.

YOU JUST BOUGHT INTO THE MADISON AVENUE MYTH -- LOCK, STOCK, CRATE AND BARREL.

COOL.

Wow. And here I am, the 20 year old, being (what seems to be) the most mature about the whole discussion. Truly eye opening.

Fascinating.

I mean the way you reduced my entire message into to a question of, "maturity." Evidently, you don't approve of my attempt at sarcasm and exposing the media for what it is -- a whore to profit, whatever the cost (thankfully, cigarette ads were banned from television and children's media, long ago).

I wonder, "LovelyRita." Is there a tattoo that signifies how 'mature' you are?
