i think that all actors need a headshot. it is a calling card. you should get the best for not only what you can afford, but for what you think will sell you best.
if you only have $200 in your account, well, hell, you can either wait and not audition for 8 months while you save up for someone who costs more but may not necessarily be "better" but may be or you can find whom you can find, get SOMEthing for the interim, then work on getting something else if needed.
and plenty of photogs have specials, such as duclos listed above (and maybe i'll consider going to her to get a different legit shot, but i'm still debating). there's nothing wrong with asking if photogs are having "sales." they do all the time, even the top guns.
and honestly, it doesn't matter whether someone costs $100 or $1000, you need to like the shots and think that they will sell you. i know i'm still thinking hard about my shots and am considering what to do, but i also know that i don't personally like Robert's photos because while very pretty, in my own personal opinion, they look way too model glamor for my taste and not enough actor headshot.
it goes back to getting what you can afford and feel like it can still sell you. if you click with the $200 guy and are intimidated by the $700 guy, you aren't going to get good shots by the $700 guy.
but i must ask- did the actress pictured above ask for her shots to be posted here on the forum at her "personal request"? because you aren't $200 and i'm sure that if she were "warning" against a particular photographer who was under $200 and mentioned here, she could have come on herself and said "this is my $200 photo, this is my more expensive photo, see the difference?" did she do that? did the original poster ask for kriegsmans shot and your shot to be compared? i'm confused about how the "customers personal request" came into that post.
and by the way, we ALL post our sigs here. i took mine off recently because i'm not in china anymore and it was a link to my china blog, and i'm deciding if i want to allow access to my personal information (such as my website) by posting a sig. but the option is there for EVERYone, not just businesses.
