If you're in LA or NY, definitely look through the portfolios of photographers in http://reproductions.com .

Find photographers that shoot people like YOU well. And by LIKE YOU, I mean skin tone, hair color, eye color, ethnicity, physical build, age range, etc. Choose your top 5 and MEET WITH ALL OF THEM to get their personality, philosophies, etc.
