There are a million and one photographers in New York City -- you shouldn't make a choice based on a single message board response. Check out Reproductions -- they have a lengthy list of excellent photographers (including Robert Kim). Browse a little and check out several portfolios before making a final decision.

Beautifully put, I couldn't agree more. There are literally thousands of headshot photographers now in the business, all claiming to be "The Best." It appears that anyone who owns a digital camera and has a website considers themselves to be a "professional." That's why I created what I believe to be the best way to determine true ability without the hype and confusion. I call them my "Before and After" portfolios. Here is my answer to the question on my F.A.Q. webpage dealing with this exact topic, which I would like to reprint for everyone. It more thoroughly explains my headshot philosophy, and can be found under the heading: "HOW DOES THE ACTOR FIND A COMPETENT HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHER": "Here's a good place to start: Compile a list of the photographers that you want to see by asking fellow actors, agents, managers, acting coaches, and casting directors. Also check to see if your photographer is published or recommended in any of the more popular acting books available -- this this shows industry respect and longetivity in the business, both qualities that I would look for in selecting a top photographer. Finally, make an appointment to meet them and see their books. Only by actually visiting them IN PERSON can you determine whether or not you want to work with them. Always look for a large portfolio with a diverse variety of actors represented-- all nationalities, ages, sexes, body types and characters. It's easy to take decent pictures of perfect models and glamorous stars, but most of us simply don't look like that. I also like to see lots of different photographic techniques used with each and every actor. "Cookie cutter" photos may be okay for high school year books, but not in the competitive field of performing arts. There are so many headshot photographers in business today that finding the best one can be a daunting and frustrating experience. As a working actor, I know. To address this often confusing dilemma, I created a simple solution by compiling the the most complete and comprehensive collection of professional headshots in the history of the industry. I call them my "Before and After" portfolios -- an exclusive, side-by-side comparison of headshots representing over 1,000 of the top photographers in the world, all under on roof. Directly comparing the work of the many different photographers available is the only true way of determining who's the right photographer for you."
