First off, there is no 'connection'. He doesn't draw me into the photo. Expressionless and almost an attitude.... Composition is ok (I'd add more space to his right), but lighting is not good. When using natural light you have to still have a source. The fact that there is no direct sunlight is a start. No harsh shadows. The sun is to his back which is good. But, you have to use light modifiers. A reflector to act like a source and another reflector for filler. You need to create catchlights. That is why most studio photographers will tell you that natural lighting is bad, because you still have to control the lighting. It takes practice to learn how to control natural lighting.
i think people haven't responded because, to be perfectly honest, we get tired of telling people that a "headshot" is NOT just a picture of your head. we see so many bad pictures here from people who have done no prior research to what the business entails (and how many HUNDREDS of books and websites are there on the subject out there?).
tell your friend to walk himself to the library or the nearest barnes and nobles or borders and get a couple of these books. they ALL cover headshots. make sure the book was printed after 2007. best if you can find them from 2008 or 2009.
then he can get a real headshot and come here and you can repost his actual headshot, not just the shot of his head.
granted, all of that said, it's not a bad picture at all for a non-professional picture, better than many of what we see here. but it's not an actor headshot. and if he is also in NY/NJ, this picture will never compete when everyone else in one of the top 2 markets in the country (and one of the top 5 in the world) has a REAL headshot, not just a picture of their head.

Good looking guy. Could do much better. I actually think he connects fine with the camera though there isn't as much light in his eyes as I would like. But I actually think this COULD get him called in for certain things. Better than your standard snapshot for sure.
