Hi guys,

My girlfriend is getting ready to take her headshots in a couple of weeks. She’s got a couple of types she wants to go with but is unsure of the kind of wardrobe and is looking for some ideas

Here are her types

1. “Distraught professional”---we are assuming any top of collared blouse or even shirt with blazer could work here.

2. “Gloomy but lovable”—think Eeyore. Someone else told her that she should go full out goth, but I think that is horrible idea. I was think maybe a nice lace blouse could work, but I am not sure how lace photographs, also of have read over and over again not wear black for headshots!

Please also recommend some color choices, she has long dark hair, heavy lashed dark brown eyes and light-mid skin and olive undertones.

These are the headshot photographers she is hoping to meet with

Bader Hower
David Muller---Hi David
Guy Viau
Paul Smith
Bradford Rogne.

Looking for forward to your comments

Wave back Supergreen

You have the right idea for the Distraught Professional....you can also think sweater vests and things that read a bit more intern-ish, depending on her age.

As for the Gloomy look, personally I don't mind shooting black clothes, but you should ultimately ask the photographer you go with.

Best of luck.

David

I don't know about this approach. Goth and distraught have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the fit and coloring of the clothes flatter her. You HAVE to get that right if you want useful shots that are going to get you called in.

Why not put together some basic, flattering choices and bring a few accessories for fun and creativity? Gloomy and distruaght should be conveyed in her thought and expression. THAT is what makes a shot stand out from the rest, THAT is what keeps people looking at a shot for more than a few seconds. Unless, of course you do something off the wall, and they stare and wonder "What was this actor thinking????"

Lonni, it is a little presumptous to say that...as far as we know she already has flattering shots and maybe they aren't serving her the way some other types of shots could...maybe she is just updating some newer looks and considering this route as an option.

I'm not saying she should look unflattering, but I have had clients who've had success with a more down-trodden look....there are roles for those types.

She already has flattering shots?? What about the post lead you to believe that?

Headshots 101 - Agents and CDs want to see the essence of YOU (not your interpretation of Eyeore). I think when you go into your session with a mindset of "Who am I going to be?" you're off track already. You end up like that tatted guy with two guns and a leather jacket in the "Holy Headshots" book.

I love vulnerable, down trodden headshots of sexy girls with smoky eye makeup in black t-shirts with bed head. The thing is, they probabably sport black tees and bed head every day. It's who they are. They aren't "putting on" for their session, which is the impression I got from the poster.

That's not what I said, I said "As far as we know"...meaning maybe she already has that and just needs to update and get some looks that might serve her better than general essence shots that may not be getting her in the door.

Thank you for comments....

I see that my post was not clear; she is not going for a character/silly shot...just something simple, crisp and flattering.
