I just moved to NY and I need to get new headshots. I did my first headshots in Miami with a well known photographer among working actors.
He has a excellent price compared to NY photographers and his work is consider the best in Miami. But now that in NY, I'm wondering if going back to him will be good for the new york market.

I do consider that his work is different from the New York photographers, but the price is very tempting. My only concern is if will still be a great tool with agents, managers and/or casting directors in NY. Like everyone of us, I want to choose the best tool possible within a reasonable price or better Big Grin

Thank you all for your input
www.boblasky.com is in miami.

I can't recall what thread I put this on recently, but there aren't many differences between the work of photographers in different cities anymore. With the introduction of the Internet, sadly, it's all looking more the same.

What should concern you more is picking your next photographer purely on ability, not where they're from.

Interestingly, I just re-shot a woman who used Lasky when still living in Miami. He may be the "go to" guy in Florida, but the choices down there are extremely limited.

Hello Robert, thanks for answering.
I understand what you mean about the ability... but like you say Lasky is the guy to "go to" in Florida, the choices are extremely limited and the prices are great. I'm in NY, I know NY has a lot to choose from, but the prices are scary Eeker Big Grin

I would feel safer with Lasky's work if staying in Florida, but I don't know if I will also be safe in NY. Confused

This a little like asking, "Would I be safer shopping at Walmart or K-Mart?

A rhetorical question, at best.

If you really wanted to be "safe," you would have never picked acting as a lifestyle at all. You would have stayed in your nice, comfortable cubicle, behind your nice, comfortable desk. Success is acting isn't about being 'safe,' it's about stepping out from your comfort zone and standing out from the masses.

In life, you have two choices. You lead or you follow.

Hi salsita. Yeah the prices for a great headshot photographer in NYC are really expensive. It took me over a year to find the right one before I settled with Robert. Although a lot of the $1000 photographers have dropped down to the $750 range, their practices still remain the same.

Here's what I did to narrow down my search.

-Clients: I specifically looked for photographers who had a lot of clients similar to my skin tone. I'm Asian and I have a tan skin tone close to Filipino... except in the winter.
-Quality: I wanted a professional and not an amateur out of art school.
-Availability: I needed to meet with the photographer in person first before I decided to use their service. It would be foolish to shell out so much cash for someone you've never met through word of mouth and they end up doing a terrible job on you.
-Personality: Why pay someone to give you a headshot, which is a personal experience, when your personalities don't match? Someone who combines professionalism with a good sense of humor is a major plus.
-Price: I wanted to be in the $500-600 range.
-Number of photos taken: If a photographer claims to be really great, then why does he/she have to take 300+ photos of you to get it?
-Portfolio: What kind of subjects do they shoot? Models? Actors? Pet spider monkeys? I wanted a photographer who specializes with mostly actors.

So I took those factors into consideration and decided on who to go to. I am extremely pleased with the final results.
