Since I started taking insulin (I'm diabetic) I've gained 20lbs. I'm 5'10 and weigh 195. I really should weigh 170, but at 45, plus the insulin, I'm not sure how realistic that is.

How important is it that I get to a more optimum weight before getting head shots done?

I forgot one other question. I have a beard. Should I lose the beard for headshots? Maybe do headshots with and without the beard?

Thanks!

Keep the beard, it just adds character. Hi, I'm in the same boat, except without the insulin for now. Take the damn shot and forget about it.

If you've no intention of ever shaving, then keep the beard.

But, I would suggest that submitting a headshot with a beard is VERY limiting. CD's will have a hard time seeing you underneath the beard, and will only consider you for roles that require beards. So, if you can live without the beard, I say shave.

Good luck.

Best,

Ron

Dear Kenneth,

You have a decision to make.

Vanity or work. Knowing that a beard will usually negatively impact your potential roles, removing it is certainly the logical sacrifice for your acting career. That said, there is nothing that says you can't have your headshots done both ways -- several looks WITH the beard and several WITHOUT. This simple procedure can actually double your casting possibilities. Just submit the appropriate headshot for the appropriate role, and you'll have the best of both worlds.

As to your first question, I always advocate losing any excess weight prior to your headshot sitting. A photo session can often be a costly proposition and your headshots can last you for several years. You want to look the best you possibly can.

“Whatever works.”

You can't really audition without a headshot.. so unless you're just going to not get out there until you lose the weight (which as we all know is hard!), you need to go ahead and get them!

try to look into less expensive headshot photographers, or new photogs who are looking to build their book. maybe you can even try to see if they'll cut you a deal if you come back to them for the second round.

I'm fortunate to have a professional photographer friend that I recently did a short film with. So I can get the headshots done fairly cheap. I'm mostly worried that i'll hurt my future chances by putting out my headshot before I lose the weight. But then I hate to lose the time.

I love the idea of getting headshots with and without the beard. Thanks Robert! I really don't mind sacrficing the beard. My vanity (and self consciousness) tells me I look better with it. I should leave that up to the casting directors.

Thanks gor the great advise guys... and gal!
