Hello! Moving to New York soon and want to get new headshots as soon as I arrive. (The ones I have now won't cut it.)

Anyone who has recommendations of photographers in NY who are great at capturing character and personality - please let me know! I don't want modelling photographers who do headshots on the side and don't see the difference between those two things, if you know what I mean. I'm dying for recommendations for photographers who capture PERSONALITY!

For an example of work I love, I planned to see Vanie Poyoy in LA when I thought I was moving there.

It's very important to note that the photographer who is best able to capture your character and personality is the photographer with whom you feel the most comfortable. If, during your session, you feel relaxed and are enjoying yourself, then your personality will shine through ... in your headshots.

So, check out a lot of portfolios (www.reproductions.com is a good source for NY photographer listings) and then meet with a few photographers to get a sense of who will be best able to put you at ease.

Guess I should throw my hat in the ring.

Meet or at least talk on the phone with all your potential candidates.

Go with someone you feel comfortable with, because it will show up in your pictures!

I have to recommend all three of the photographers that posted here.


Robert Kim does beautiful work. Technically (lighting and stuff) perfect, and the people always look real with personality.

Ron Brown (who I have used and loved) can work with just about anyone. He's great and my pictures have been very successful among industry folks.

Dennis Kwan has fabulous photos and I hvae seen, first hand, how great the shots come out (I know people who have used him).

I recommend these guys.

I agree a photographer's portfolio should attract you first, but then I do believe it is a good idea to meet with the photographer and decide if he/she is someone with whom you'd like to spend time. I would suggest that someone who offers you liquor/drugs should be avoided and will probably have a portfolio to reflect that!!

Thank you for the advice on looking through books, meeting personally with several photographers, and seeing which one I click with. I plan on doing all these things.

However, I need some leads! : ) There are thousands of photographers in NYC and I would love it if I could get some names to research.

Susan Shacter is great but she's really expensive.

Ron Brown makes the experience really simple and easy while somehow creating incredible shots so id say try it out! -Tom

If you're still looking you should absolutely consider going to Taylor Hooper. He is absolutely amazing and sweet as a pie. His makeup artist is a sweetheart as well. I had so much fun with both of them! The good thing about Taylor Hooper is he's very affordable, very good, very educated about photography, and he was once an actor so he understands how to photograph them as well as make them feel comfortable. I hate taking pictures and I found the headshot experience to be very fun. Check out his site

Just checked it out - I really do like some of these! Thanks for sharing. I just got headshots in '08 and I am happy with them, but will keep this photographer on my list for future shoots.
