I just had new headshots of my son made and in trying to save some money went to a headshot printer in CA that a friend had recommended. I should read the website more clearly because I didn't realize that the headshots are lithos. I didn't really know the difference at the time between lithos and photos anyway but had a feeling they weren't as good and wouldn't have tried them if I had known. I rec'd the trial prints today and lithos are definatly not the same quality I get from Reproductions. However the cost is a fraction of ordering from Reproductions. I Order copies on paper suitable for printing resumes directly on the back of the headshot. Cost of 100 lithos $65. Cost of 100 photo headshots from Reproductions $141. I can get 100 copies ea of 2 shots of the lithos for less then 1 shot at Reproductions and right now cash is tight. I also don't want to waste $130 getting 200 headshots if they will be looked down on.

Here's my question. Will having litho copies of my son's headshot hurt his chances of booking? I don't think they are bad lithos, just not the same quality as photos.

In LA, lithographs have always been acceptable, and they certainly won't hurt your son's chances.

In NY, not so.

Reproductions LA used to do lithos, but no longer.

The reason lithos don't appear as good as photos is that they are made on a printing press, like magazines and the like. But they come in a dizzying array of prices and quality. I recommend Final Print in Los Angeles. Just ask for 'Joycelyne Lew,' and tell her that I sent you personally.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like I might be better off then going w/the more expensive photos since I'm looking to send his headshots to agents in NY and not LA. I only tried the lithos from CA because that's where my friend suggested I go but I have no desire to submit him for anything in LA. He's 1 of 4 kids and the only one that acts so trips to NY are pretty much the most I can manage right now from here in good ole PA! Wink

Good idea.

Better stick with photos.

I really have no idea why lithos have never connected here. At the high end, quality has become so good now that there's very little difference between the two. A CD looks at a photo for only 1.4 seconds, and I doubt that an NYC casting director's eye is any better than their LA cousins.

I used lithos exclusively while living in LA.

P.S.--

I'm negotiating a studio space in Philly as we speak, singin4mom. Something downtown. If I can obtain the property, I'll be shooting there one or two weekends a month. When in Philly, give Mike Lemon Casting a call and send him a photo. Tell him I recommended you.
