So after 4 years, I'm finally getting new headshots next week. I've been looking at photographer websites in both NY and LA.

I'm really seeing a lot of everything. Tank tops, turtlenecks (not many), patterns (again, not many), stripes, shirts with designs...

I also saw a major trend of women wearing shirts that nearly exactly match their eye color, which is especially striking on blue eyes (which I have).

I've seen ruffles on shirts, tight shirts, loose shirts...

I'm wondering what trends you all have seen? I don't think it's a free for all, I do think the traditional V-necks solid colors seem to work best, but just wondering what you all think.

Also, hair... I will be 28 when I start using my shots, but I typically play high school and college age. But on stage, I can also play younger.

What do you all think of ponytails, low side ponytails, clips in hair (not bright crazy ones, but low-key clips that match my hair color and may not be seen)...

What do you all think?

Thanks in advance!

All of your questions are important, and all are easy to answer. But it’s impossible to give you detailed advice on what to wear or how to style your hair for your photo session without seeing exactly what you look like, in person.

That’s what your initial consultation with the photographer is for. Anything else is like describing color to a blind man. During that essential first meeting, you not only learn what he knows about photography, but more importantly, what he can do SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU. If he hands you a list called, “What To Wear During A Headshot,“ walk away. You can get that in a book. If he can’t answer any and all of your questions, walk away. That’s what you’re paying him for.

Any qualified, professional headshot photographer should be giving you all the advice you need to insure you'll have a successful headshot session including wardrobe, makeup and hair recommendations, well in advance of your sitting. You’ve heard me say more than once, “There is more to being a professional photographers than simply owing a camera.” If you chose yours wisely, he’ll provide you all this information, and more. Your career depends on it.

“Whatever works.”
