I'm from Orange County and can tell you that all of the good ones are in LA.

Go to Reproductions.com and find photographers that photograph kids that look like your kid well. Ie. Skin tone, hair color, eye color, ethnicity, physical build, age range, etc. Pick your top 5 and meet with all of them to get their philosophies and personalities.

If money is an issue, the best way to go is with JC Penney, they have good equipment and some of the photographers are very good. You might ask to see if they still have Joni working there. Tell them what you want, that you want a headshot to mail out for acting, and they will do it.

The telephone number for the JC Penney portrait studio at the Village at Orange is: 714.637.5081

You can go to their site to print coupons to save money: http://www.jcpportraits.com/

And then for reproductions, you can go to Select Graphic & Printing, in Garden Grove, their telephone number is: 714.537.5250

I hope that helps. You might end up with something really good, at a very low price.

We went the cheaper way once and it wasn't worth it. If you want to compete you need
good headshots by a good photographer. Make sure you look at their work first. They should be able to show you examples and unless you are
really good at makeup get a make up artist.
My daughters agent used to manage Tom Casey and she says he is good. Being it is L.A. there are
a lot of good photographers. You will want to have touch ups done too if needed.

JC Penney? That's TERRIBLE advice!

For each cheap actor out there, there are more than a 100 seriously investing in QUALITY headshots.

GOOD headshot photographers in Southern California charge $250-500. Anything beyond that is for some competent name photographer like Robert Kim or some overpriced quack like Kevyn Major Howard.

Hello, My advice would always use a professional photographer. It will get you the shots that you need the first time. You do not have to spend a lot of money , especially for kids. Agents will almost always want a pro shot unless they are under 4.. It is great to shoot in the market that you are attempting to break into as every region seems to have their own style. Hope this helped.

Tough crowd Smiler Come on up to L.A. There's several wonderful headshot photographers that won't rip you off and have exceptional quality starting as low as $75 (wink*wink). Never subscribe to the, "if it's not at least $200 it's not worth it" nonsense. The market is subject to supply and demand. Right now in this economy there are several photographers that have lowered their prices to stay competitive, this does not mean they are substandard photographers, it means, times are tough! Do your research, theres ample professional, and AFFORDABLE headshot photographers up here! And for the love of the craft, DO NOT go to JC Penny! Smiler
