Can anyone recommend some really good/experienced LA Photographers? I need to get my headshots done and am not familiar with any of the LA photographers..
Thanks in advance!

It's NOT right to recommend photographers to you. What might rock for me or anyone else might suck for you!
It's YOUR responsibility to go through portfolios like http://reproductions.com and find photographers who do a great job at photographing someone like you well.
By "like you," I mean ethnicity, skin tone, age range, hair color, eye color, physical build, etc.
Pick your top 5 and MEET WITH ALL OF THEM! This is so you can get their personalities and philosophies. If you can't gel over coffee, then you probably WON'T gel during the actual photoshoot.

Be sure to look through Argentum's website too, they have an extensive list of great LA based photographers. Take your time and do your research. Ask the photographer several questions to insure he's right for you.

NOT a fan! The photos in his portfolio all look too touched up and phony. Nothing natural about it.
I think it's subjective. As with any photographer, it's a matter of taste. Some of his shots are excellent for headshots, others more appropriate for print.
Another place to find lists of photographers with samples of their work is on the LA Casting site (Casting Networks) or on NowCasting.

Yes, Mominbiz, I agree. That is probably why we don't see the word 'headshot', anywhere on his site. There are as many Fotomakers out there as there are tastes. I don't see any reason to tear up someone's work ....anonymously.
As for the photos being heavily re-touched, I only know that I sat and waited, as my images were downloaded from camera to disk, and handed to me.
Most important, his pictures work for me. That is why I recommended him to Dreamin BIG, who by the way, was asking for recommendations.
I do not think the work is too retouched or phony. I actually don't mind David Zaugh, to be honest. The only thing I have a small issue with is the big orange light he loves to shoot people in front of- kind of makes everyone look like Jesus. Other than that, well, there it is.

Beyond the retouching and artificial look, I was trying to figure out why I really didn't like Zaugh's work. Thanks Miss Stone for pointing out the Orange light. That's what really bothers the hell out of me. I don't think his work is worth at least $350.

Did someone actually tell you he shot them in front of an orange light? People say some very odd things. Did this come from an anonymous source? The shots are done in an alley, in natural light. You are probably seeing the sunlight, bounced off the brick wall.
I love the guy's work, but that's my opinion. We all have one.
Jesus, man, the person asked for recommendations. What in the effing world motivates you guys to be like that? I mean, really.

Come on, Jim, don't yell at me- I said I don't mind his work. The Jesus comment was meant to be funny- sorry you didn't see it that way.
I also figured it was natural light. I just worded it wrong.
Peace, as usual.

I don't absolutely agree, not least because you may find cheaper but perfectly satisfactory photographers through word of mouth.
It's certainly true that when it comes down to a choice, you need to "connect" with the person and their approach. But listening to recommendations from others shouldn't keep you from doing that.
Get as much information as you can from as many sources, I say. But then, yes, trust your gut (and, in this case, your eye.)
