My daughter is 6 and in need of a headshot for this weekend. Can they wear a hat or headband in the photo or is nothing in the hair better? How close up should it be? Is color still the norm on a matte finish?

Nothing in the hair. Go to reproductions.com and see what headshots look like.

Thanks. I've been to that website and also Robert Kim's website and they are quite different, so now I am confused.

Go with the most natural, pleasant look ie no makeup.

No hats for sure, but I don't agree with "nothing in the hair." When we shot my DD's headshots, we did several different hair looks: loose, headband, pony tails, pigtails. What's most important is that the hair is neat and off the face so that it doesn't draw focus from where it should be: on the child's features.

In addition, she should look close to what she will look like when she walks in the door of an agent or CD. Don't do soemthing totally different with her hair that you do not normally do or that you cannot duplicate easily to look like her headshot. And, no glamour/pageant shots, unless that is what you are going for.
