I know this may seem like a silly question, as I know for a fact that people have done this, but, is it acceptable to send in photos taken at home on my digital camera to agencies along with my resume? It's just that I don't have money to take head shots but I'd really like to start sending out my stuff. Thank you for answering!!

Um, no. You would get laughed at by the intern who opened the envelope. Your snapshot would probably be defaced with a sharpie, and you would look like a guy in a mariachi band.

Wait until you can afford real headshots before sending to agents! It is the most important thing in your submission.

hey hey hey , you said polaroid !

on polaroids: castings here in NYC have mostly gone digital. Beth melsky's on broadway was the last I remember who used polaroid, but now uses casting frontier and digital camera.

but to mail a polaroid ? I'd save for a proper image of yourself.

digital camera. That is an opened ended question.

is it acceptable to send in photo you take in your home with your digital camera ?

YES and NO.

If you know photography, got a decent digital SLR camera and mid-telephoto lens, obey the rules of headshot photography then yes.

If you got one of those point and shoots, then NO !

If you got NO MONEY to shoot a headshot then you are in trouble. Alot of places shoots your headshot for 99 dollars.

did you know reproductions cost around a dollar a shot for decent quality 8x10 photos ? did you know sending it out now costs about a dollar for 2 ounces big enevelope ?

You must consider this as a business if you are going to last. and the first thing to do is form a business plan. then get venture capital. do it the right way.

If you're at the point in your career where you don't even have headshots, then trust me - you're not ready to start submitting yourself to agents.

Thank you for your detailed answer to my question! I really appreciate it! : ) I'm gonna just do some research on pricing b/c that is true, I have seen advertisements for head shots around $100, which isn't to much to spend. Again, thank you.

Jesus Christ. 100$? Just be careful. It's almost impossible to get anything decent for this money. You can as well have a friend take your images, and then save up for real shots.

Or you can find a good amateur photographer.

Amateur doesn't mean he can't do it. The Greek roots of this word have been forgotten, and it often means incompetent.

But the true amateur does it for the love of it. And there are quite good ones out there, many of them better than some middle of the road photographer we all know.
