Living in NYC past year.....job outlook has been dismal as well as acting opportunities. I know LA is the same right now. As far as part time jobs and/ or industry related jobs, who is being hit worse right now? LA, right? Even so LA has more industry jobs to offer so are they on par with NYC right now. I am contemplating a move to LA, as I have more contacts and friends out there. How is everyone else holding up in their respective locations?

Whether NY or LA -- whereever you can create a support base and network well in, if you have no other obligations, that's where you should go.

I'm holding up well in NYC simply because I've networked and have family here. I don't know your situation to properly and fully comment on every aspect, so I think in the end, this is your life and only you know what is best for it, not a group of strangers.

Getting off my soapbox now. Good luck on whatever you decide.

people ARE hiring out here. but expect your avg payrate to be in the $8-11 an hour. out here, "competative pay" is $10-12 an hour, whereas the same job in LA would likely pay in the $14-20 an hour.

catering out here? the avg company (i'm "repped" by 6, and 3 are considered 'top') pays $11-13/hr. in NYC, i never had to accept a catering job that paid less than $18, and the company i worked with most paid $20.

the good news, all jobs are required to pay minimum wage. so if you are lucky enough to get a good waiter job, you make $8 an hour off the bat before tips. but it's damn hard to get a decent waiter job. most server jobs require several interviews, written tests, etc.

anyway, unless you have connections, it's only getting worse out here. and it costs more to live here too, than NYC (unless you were living in the Village or Midtown).

I agree. Having lived and catered in both NYC (2 years) and LA (3 years), I have found LA costs more to live in than NYC. The rent in NYC for me is the same as what I paid in LA with roomates, BUT in LA the car factor greatly increases the need for a higher wage. So why are wages higher in NYC than in LA? I never understood this. A studio in Queens costs as much as a studio in Koreatown in LA, yet the jobs in LA pay $5 or so less than hour than in NYC. Makes no sense to me. Cost of living is HIGHER in LA than NYC. Not the other way around.

From what I just read, NYC is doing better.

Unless you have someone who pays your way, stay put- for now.

If you are a woman, try the Roberts house. I stayed there college summers. You get a room, bathrooms in the hall, breakfasts and dinners... it was a lot of fun, like a dorm. But, again, you have to be female and I think between 15 and 25. There are a few of them throughout the city, at least, there were in the 90's. Rent was around $500 a month including food, gas, electric. There is no phone or AC, but now with cell phones that wouldn't matter...

NYC is MUCH easier than LA. In LA EVERYONE is trying to be an actor, which makes the survival job sitch tougher. It is easier substitute teaching in NY, temping, etc. Also, pay is much higher.

I would walk on HOT MOLTEN LAVA to be in NYC.

Those numbers and facts are encouraging. I really want to look into it.

I agree. I make $19 an hour temping in NYC. In Glendale, Ca, the temp service wanted to pay me $10 an hour for the same job I do here (data entry). Makes no sense! NYC is great. Center of the universe!

That's great news for anyone pursuing a career as a temp in NYC. I would move back in a second but, unfortunately, it is not the center of the Film and TV universe.

More and more tv and film is being shot in NYC every year. Thanks to tax breaks.
