You could be making from $12.75 - $20/hour with a temporary Census Bureau job where most people work evenings and weekends. From what I hear, working for tips isn't a reliable as it used to be. For the Census Bureau positions, there's paid training and authorized mileage reimbursement if you're working outside of the office.
For more info contact 866-861-2010 or go online to Census Jobs and Info. They're looking to fill a lot of positions between now and March 09.

I took the test for it today. Only 3 people took it during my session, and 6 in the earlier session today. Surprising, considering the economy. It's probably wise to take it sooner than later.

I took the test back in December was offered a Crew Leader position last month. I turned it down before accepting the role of Quality Control after hearing the words "set your own schedule". I completed the training last week, however, since training I have yet to do anything. My supervisor told me that many of the enumerators quit once they found out how much work they would have to do. So since last Thursday, i've had nothing to do, so i'm not making any money right now. During the training, they also changed the line that we'd be working for 3 months, to 1 month. So even if I do receive some work here in the next few days, it may not be for very long. My advice, if you have a job, avoid this one. Since getting hired half of what I was told during the interview process has changed. If you are desperate, go for it. The training does pay, hourly and mileage.
I ran into a guy on set the other day who is doing it. He seemed to like it so far. He was taking two days off to do background, so he is working so far.
I'm looking into it. the come and go aspect of it is a little annoying, but no more annoying then the come and go aspect of the film industry.
And yeah...I'm sorta desperate. Brokey McBrokster latley!
I recently took a job with the Census. Was told it would be a 12 week gig w/one week of paid training. Ended up being one week of paid training and 6 days of work, 8-10 hours a day! Not worth the time and effort of training.

Well i'm in week 5 of my census job, and for the 3rd time this month, i'm having trouble getting my paycheck. I worked 8 hours 2 weeks ago, and 2 hours last week. At this point, i'd have to suggest to anyone considering, to look elsewhere.
I took the census taker test and the manager test several months ago. I passed both with flying colors but have not heard anything. I've heard they base their decisions more on your location. Is this true?

Interesting, the different perspectives here. I am nearing the end of my census assignment here in Westchester, NY. Choose the hours you work (daylight, since you go door-to-door), 36-40 hours weekly. My assignment involved verifying addresses and updating the mailing list for residences. It was estimated to last 6-8 weeks, but it ended up being 4 weeks plus training (there are only so many living quarters in existence). And the amount of work dwindles more quickly if people are more efficient. Also, they hired a certain amount of people, expecting to lose a percentage. With everyone having lost their jobs and looking to census jobs to fill that void, there were an excess number of employees working this limited assigment.
Haven't had a problem with direct deposit, and we submitted our hours and mileage electronically.

I worked as a Lister. Here is the bad thing about ending early. We were told the faster we worked the better chance we will keep working to different areas. I was so mad . Hey had idiots doing 45 houses an hour we were done in two weeks . If we could have worked the 19 the required we could have made work for another 4 weeks ( still earlier than they told us the project would end). We had people spraining ankles and falling trying to work fast. It made everyone look like big old broke fools. That is the government . When have they ever rewarded someone for working fast Dah.
