I've never worked at a temp agency before (I have come office experience) and was wondering if anyone could reccomend an agency in the LA/South Bay area as well as some tips on how to land a job with one-- I'm sure it is very competitive right now.

thanks for any feedback friends.

From what I've heard every temp agency around here is pretty much not hiring right now.

Temp agencies aren't doing great in NYC either. Even if you call every day and night to check in for work, there's no guarantee you're going to find work. You have to have a history with the agency in order for them to even consider you for anything that trickles in at all nowadays.

When I mean history, I mean, that you have been registered and worked with them on several assignments in the past and stayed on friendly terms with them. If you are new, good luck.

Kelly is one of the oldest and biggest - maybe like the Central Casting of temp agencies. "Kelly Girl" used to be a synonym for temporary worker. My local office has been very pleasant to deal with, but I've been lucky to work one day a week through them. (I have excellent office skills and had no problem finding work in the go-go '90s.) Employers are just less likely to replace a sick or vacationing employee these days than they are to tell everyone else to "suck it up."

Find the office near you and make an appointment. There are two general categories of day work: light industrial (e.g., shipping and receiving) and clerical. If applying for clerical work, make sure you look like a professional when you go in. If you have access to Microsoft Office and other standard business programs, practice using them. You will be tested, and your scores will determine which positions you're eligible for.

Kimco has also been good for me in the past. Some people swear by Apple One, but I haven't had very good luck with them.

I had nice experiences with Star Staffing. I got connected withthem through working the AFM...then they put me on a very cool job that I did off/on until I left LA.

Although Friedman has the name (in the temp office world) I didnt have a great experience with them. It was kind of like you should be bowing down at their feet to get in with them.

Okay rule one...sign up for more than one. With that said:

Apple One
Act 1
Spherion

Sign up for more than one...brush up on your word, mac, excel, and power point skills. The more things you know how to do and well the more likely you are to get a job. Having a temp agent is like having an agent no lie. You've got to get on their good side so they put you up for jobs!

Every truly great accomplishment is at first impossible.
