Does anyone know how to break into singing? (and not just musical theatre). I want to make consistent money... like singing for weddings or corporate events, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You could start by making a few different singing demo CDs, ready to submit for various types of singing gigs. One demo should be of our National Anthem and O' Canada, since both are sung whenever a US team plays a Canadian team. Singing the anthem/s at various events like sporting events, 4th of July, rodeos, a library or other city building openings, really helps give you great exposure and experience.

Have other demos of songs sung at weddings, different denomination church/synagogue services, etc. Also, a demo of holiday songs for that time of year and another demo of inspirational songs by popular artists. The key is to be prepared with a variety of music ready to go and then market yourself. Submit the anthem demo to all the major sports teams in your area. Advertise in the trades like Back Stage. Visit different churches and synagogues and leave your business cards. List your services in theatre and music performance playbills. Call different city/community event commities and let them know you are available. Not all your gigs will be paying at first, but getting your name and talent out there is important to help you start booking the paying jobs.

If you are good at what you do, you could also offer voice lessons.

Good luck!
