I'm currently studying to be a personal trainer because I see it as a way to make a living and free up sometime so I can audition, study, network more. My desk job is just not cutting it right now. Does anyone have any feedback on this idea? Miss stone i'm looking at you.

How do you study to be a personal trainer? I work out quite often on my own, and think with a little more work, I could maybe jump into this temporarily. Thanks!

Sorry Matthew- I was off for a while.

Hey, better late than never.

I think it's a good idea. I am thinking about doing it myself, actually. If you go to 24 Hour Fitness' website, they suggest places where you can get certified.

Matthew,
Just be aware that training is a commission based job and you won't make any money until you get some clients. Tough days with the economy the way it is for people to afford trainers. I have been a trainer for 5 years now and it can be very tough to make money at it. Also the hours are not as flexible as you would think. Most gyms require you to keep certain hours so there is a presence on the gym floor at all times. Plus in order to get enough exposure to get clients many trainers end up working 16 hour days while not getting paid for it. You only get paid per session. I think it can work for you but it is difficult starting out. Once you have a number of clients you can usually work your own schedule.

I am fairly sure 24 Hour Fitness offers a decent base plus commission. My friend worked there.

Matthew, my oldest son is a personal trainer while working on his degree in exercise science. Look at Crossfit Training (he just got certified)....if you can keep up.

24 hr fitness USED to pay decent hrly rates, but have recently become very commission based.

I, too, would not recommend training if you are looking for an instant cash flow.

Good PT positions require NASM/CSCS etc., certs with about 2 yrs of experience--there you can get started at about $20/hr--even then you have to have a clientele base.
