Sorry you're having such a tough time. Check out the "LA Job Market" thread too. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Focus groups can be a good way to make a bit of money. A little bit, since they tend to pay anywhere from $20 - $100 per group, and once you do a group, the particular company who you did it through probably won't be able to use you again for at least three months.

I've been looking for these groups in NYC, but haven't had much luck so far. I know there are some good ones in LA though, just can't remember the names. Do a web search for Los Angeles focus groups or market research - I bet you'll find some. Worth a try!

Im sorry! I understand your stress! Try asking around. Most positions being hired for are NOT advertised. I the restaurant job I got was nowhere on a search engine. I just got lucky by finding out the information at the right time from a family member and I went in at the right time not even thinking about it. But now my first job is giving me crap hours too. Start asking the people you work with about other jobs. Youd be suprised how many people who are in the same boat as you or who work elsewhere too

We should get together and have a "Backstage Forum" boarding house. We could all chip in for a massive house at the beach and pay a few hundred a month each.

Hey, I lived in a boarding house YEARS ago back in Oz. It was one room in this house in a great neighborhood and I paid $115 a week. Smiler

But if we get on a treadmill together you are going to get off first or I'm going to die. It's really that simple. I'm not going to be outworked." -Will Smith

I would start looking into research studies. Depending on how much they make and what you're willing to tolerate, they can be fairly lucrative, plus if you do find a regular job it won't interfere and some studies go on for an entire year.

Aviron, could you elaborate on what you were referring to in your post? I'm not sure I follow what exactly that is, or entails.

I think Aviron is referring to medical research studies, where you allow them to experiment on you. I've done a few of those - the ones I did tested the absorption of a very small amount of medicine. You probably need to have a good tolerance of needles, though every study is different.

The job market has been terrrrible for years now and it is real hard to find a job, but temp agencies and food service are often your best bet. I'd suggest dog walking or something, but often the dog walking services require a bit of hassle (like getting insurance and learning animal cpr). I would also suggest doing some sort of promotional things if you could. Depending on how old you are cigarette promotion jobs are usually pretty easy to get in on, and they hire fairly often.

Temp work is awesome if you have some office skills (computer, typing, filing).
