I would say a little of both.

I think you can make a great actor with enough work out of almost anyone who really wants to put the effort in, but many people do get a head start if he/she is a naturally comfortable person. And ssome of this has to do with how the person was raised too.

Well dearie let me ask you this.

Was Tom Cruise born bat s**t crazy? No. But he may have had a tendency for it in his genetics. And that is why he is apart of scientology.

I'm terrible sorry if I insulted any scientology people.

Any way,yes I would have to say that all the TRULY GREAT actors were born with it, but there are plenty of people who may not have been born with it and are still very VERY good! It takes practice to learn the art and use it, but some have a naturally born tendency for show buisness that makes them truly amazing.

For Grandpa...

Great actors are made. Mostly in China, where there's this factory that has turned out quite a few. Regrettably, they have such poor quality control that a few really defective ones have slipped through too, and so no one gives them credit for their hand-stamped, first quality, not quite trademarked (long legal story there) Great Actors.

Tragic, really.

A bit of both. You aren't just born a great painter. Monet went to school to learn. Da Vinci not only was trained but he was a teacher as well. Other great actors have taken classes and gotten degrees in theatre, etc.
You need to have that passion there, that desire or you can learn the technical end of it but never the artistic.

great question!!! I guess I am just playing devil's advocate in asking what "great" means to you...to me it is that unique combination of craft , charisma and that je ne sais quoi "it" factor that captures and enraptures and enthralls. So, if THAT is greatness, then the "it" is born and the craft is made!
