At a typical audition where you bring your own monologue are you supposed to memorize it without reading it off the paper or do you take it off the paper?

Memorized!!!!

"A woman, standing nude, looks in the bedroom mirror and says to her husband, "I feel horrible, I look fat and ugly. Pay me a compliment.? Her husband replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect." He never heard the shot."

When asked to bring a monologue, it is always memorized and thoroughly prepared. Good actors spend months preparing a monologue before performing it. And good actors are always working on it and have an arsenal of different styles and types of monologues. Read plays to find monologues (best way) so you understand the whole story of where the character is coming from and understand the story so you can make strong character choices. (Who, what, where, when why, when?)

Taking something off the page is for working with sides that are provided.

Oops. I typed "when" twice.

You only need to know the "when" once. LOL

Don't take shoretcuts. Do the work.

Just do the best you can do with what you have chosen. 3 minutes is a little long to me, 1 to 2 minutes is usually the norm.

Don't worry, just focus. You'll be great.

Break legs.

Monologues and the first line of a script are the ONLY things that should be 100% memorized in an audition.

I agree that 3 minutes is too long for a monologue. A minute is enough.

But I would still work on memorizing some longer ones as it is great practice.
