Yay! As I've grown as a person, I've learned alot more about acting (Don't you just love that?)since I posted this...post.
I love that way of thinking avidactor, and I understand how you came to those conclusions alot more clearly now. Whenever actors talk about their role and they talk about their choices they made, I find myself screaming sometimes "Well, how did you come to that choice?! " I think I get it a little more, and just goes to show that you will always learn something new about acting if you are open to it. :-)
Anyways, the real reason of posting this is that in the book Audition by Michael Shurtleff, (which is a very simple yet very good book)he talks about the opposites also. When you brought up a death and how it relates to the character, it made me think of Tom Cruise and his role in Magnolia. Now, Tom Cruise isn't the first person I would think of when people say good actor, but he has done some pretty astounding work. In Magnolia, his father is dieing of cancer. His first reaction is something to the effect of good riddance, because the father wasn't a good person to his wife or son (Tom Cruise if you've gotten lost). However, when Tom sees his father dieing in front of him, he fights back his tears with everything he has and ends up losing and breaks down. So, you have to see humanity in choices you make I think. You can say I hated my father and I hope he burns in hell, but somewhere in you, there should be a desire to see him live so that you can forgive him and move on in your life. If anything, it'll give you an extra obstacle in your way to fight for in order to gain your character's objective/goal/dream/intent/etc.
