okay so I've had this issue with my acting and I need to put it to rest. it gives me a lot of grief when I think about it to much.
ok so we've all heard people who use what you'd call a "stage voice".. like if you are over acting. Whenever I act, I love it, and this is what I want for my career but I always feel like I sound fake.
and maybe it has something to do with being on stage and having to play to the theater but how do you tell if you actually sound alright? other then taping.
it really drives me insane. I feel sometimes like I'm not good or that I'm the person in the room who everyone is looking at like they try to hard.
So how do you tell if you really seem like the character? How do you know that you are actually being convincing, and not sounding like you're tryin to hard?
maybe it has something to do with people hating the sound of their own voice but I just want to put this one insecurity behind me.
plus I don't want to go to auditions only to make a fool of myself every time.

Turn out the lights and it's all the same darkness, right?

You can tell if you are over acting if you haven't decided who your character is talking to..For yourself who are you (the actor) are saying these words of the character...who are you addressing. The audience need not know, whom you've chosen.

The volume of your voice can be adjust be it on stage or (less projecting) when on film..That is a technical problem.

But it is always noticeable to the naked eye when the actor has personalized whom they saying the words to...even if they are talking directly to the camera or the other actor (tress) opposite them. That way you are taking the burden off yourself of trying to hard because You aren't trying You are being real.

hey snuffleupagus--

I know what you are talking about with sounding fake-- but the language you use in this post seems like you are so self concious! I'm really, very far from a shrink, and I can compleately relate to where you are comming from in feeling like the asshole in the room-- it just sounds to me like your fear is actually kind of general and it sounds like you are getting in the way of what you want for your career (to use your words). I can relate so much to that.

That said, I think what DeniseNYC suggested about working with an acting coach (1 on 1) might be really helpful because then you could really pin-point what about your voice needs to be changed and you wouldn't have to feel like you were "performing".

Sorry if I'm being really maternal-- I just totally understand what you are saying and my heart goes out to you.

best of luck.
