I found this incredible documentary on Stella Adler, maybe its been posted here before
Contains a lot of great historical information about her life with the group theater, hilarious footage from her classes in the late 80's and interviews with contemporaries like Bobby Lewis and Carl Malden. This is really something everyone who considers themselves an actor should see...
I have so much respect for what Stella accomplished during her life-time. So much of her thoughts are in what I teach.
It's amazing to watch these videos. I've seen Stella teach before. And it's so interesting to watch her struggle with the limited vocabulary she had back then.
She often is unable to teach process to the actors, so she simply MODELS the Archetypes she wants them to access. This was so common among teachers of her era. Similarly, she directs a lot -- again, as opposed to teaching process -- she has very limited ability to teach TOOLS AND PROCESSES so the actor can do it on their own.
She was a brilliant giant in her time, with her theatrical flair. And I love her. And I wish she was still around to spend time with.
And I just feel so certain she'd be thrilled at how much we've advanced since her time. Just as she says her father would have been so thrilled at how much she'd advanced since his time.
The work keeps advancing and growing. Imagine Stella, back then, saying we should all only study methods 60 years old. Nonsense. Just as she would agree it would be nonsense, in 2009, to only study the body of work she created 50 years ago. The work keeps growing and evolving, even today. And I wish Stella was around to see it. She'd freak out even more than she used to freak out.
