Hi,

We are just starting out in this modeling industry, and I want to make sure that I take all precautions..I am managing a beautiful 2 yr old girl. We already have professional head shots taken of her,and i need to know the best place to begin. I need to find her a reputable agency, in the Philadelphia area. Can someone please provide any ideas? There are too many fake agencies online, that I am having a hard time filtering them out.. Please provide any and all information.. Anything will be helpful!

Manager Staring...
I am going to take a stab at this, even though your post is a little bit "out there". I'm guessing that you truly don't know how you sound.

If you are truly a manager, this is what you already should have known before you started in the profession of "management":

1. Asking on a board like this, a message board that caters primarily to newbie/mid-level ACTORS (not representatives) is kind of silly. You aren't going to get the answers you need here.

2. Your post sounds like, "hey everybody, please do all the research and work for me so that I can take that knowlege and charge my client for it". Sorry, it isn't our job to give you "all the basics".

3. A BABY in PA does not need a manager. She needs an agent. That's all. A BABY in PA also doesn't need professional headshots.

4. You aren't likely to find too many respectable agencies for a baby in the Philly area, because there aren't enough jobs to sustain an agency business. Most kids are working the NYC market.

5. You are going to have a tough time finding a rep for a singleton 2 year old. Most companies hire TWINS at that age for tv/film work, although you mentioned modeling. Ever heard of terrible twos? Not a good time to seek an agent as a rule. There are exceptions of course, but you should know that it won't be easy.

6. You aren't qualified to be a manager if you don't already know who the legit agencies are, and have them on speed dial. You should have RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM. That's a manager's job.

I dont' call myself a doctor because I gave my kid an dose of Tylenol. Know what I mean?

So let's cut to the chase. If you are really a mom, the questions you are asking are understandable and appropriate for a very new parent. If you are really a manager, who is charging for your services, your client should get a refund.

You might want to check out the kid modeling forum on this board. It is called Child and Teen Models (as opposed to actors, singers and dancers, which are in the other kid forum here).

BizParentz also has an article about babies on the website. It is mostly about LA and NY, but the general principals still apply:

There are also other articles there about what a manager really does.

Henry is right.

I don't think you're qualified to be a manager. What are you? This kid's uncle or something? I wouldn't pay you 15% of my kid's work (if I had a kid that is).

If you want to be successful as a "manager" at your level, you should move to L.A. and prey on aspiring actors in their 20s who think getting a manager first will help them get an agent and ultimately success. There are plenty of "managers" in L.A. and there doesn't look like any manager saturation anytime soon.

A good start in L.A. is to make friends with a top agency, photographers, and various acting schools. Then do background work and talk with young actors and edify the hell out of the agency you're friends with. Then those young actors will join you in hopes of eventually signing with that agency. Then when they sign with you, you can send them to the various photographers and acting schools that you're friends with and pray for a kickback. Wink
