Just wondering how you got your start in the bizz. I know you can't go into too much detail because that could reveal specifics about you. But I was wondering, did you start out as an actor, or did you just fall into the bizz in a different way. Also, would you consider being a professional actor, or do you enjoy the steady work of an agent better. Also, what do you look for specifically when talent auditions for you? Do you want a specific look? Is it a healthy resume? Is it sheer talent? I ask because, I plan on moving to L.A. within the next six months. I hardly have squat for film and television under my belt, Im still non-union, but I have a great theatrical resume, and enough training to back up my talent. I know getting work right away is more impossible than finding a black stock car racer, but what are the chances of obtaining an agent with a background similar to mine? Thanks!

Like most agents, I started as an assistant at one of the biggest agencies in town. That gave me the background and training I needed to become an agent. Since then, I've worked at several companies - both large and small. At this point in my career, I only work with actors who have extensive resumes so except for young performers, no one really has to audition for me. We sign clients based on resumes, demo reels, and meetings.

And no, I've never been an actor or had the wish to be one.

As for you, the last thing you want to think about when you move out to L.A. is getting an agent. The truth is you're not ready. Instead, you should focus on learning how the town works, getting into a good class, and trying to find commercial represention that will help you get a SAG card.

One step at a time...

Cool

Thanks Secret Agent man! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I just feel like taking more classes is going to drive me nuts. I've been taking classes, it seems like, forever! I've got my bs, and my mfa, plus I've been taking on camera technique training, and all sorts of other crazy stuff. But, I do understand the importance of networking after classes, so thats just as much to it as well.
I know without union status, an agent shouldn't even consider you. I've got 2 sag waivers (taft hartley), but haven't had a chance to get that third one. I lived in a non-union town, so it was easier for me to get work there without being sag, aea, or aftra.
Thanks for the info my friend, take care!
