MOST of the new television shows that premiered this season are AFTRA shows. If you get a principal role on an AFTRA show, besides getting that job, you also qualify to join SAG (after you've been an AFTRA member for a year.) LOTS of message board readers are going to jump up and down and holler and tell you to stay non-union as long as possible. Let 'em. It seems your question is on the topic of getting an agent. Professional agents want to represent union actors. Join when you feel it's time (after doing your research on the subject and saving up the initiation fee. It's costly.) Will it "make a difference"? It will make a difference to the agents for whom it makes a difference.
