Just don't do it. The only agencies interested in someone that new (unless they're very young) would probably be interested for the wrong reasons (selling them services, etc.) Answer ads in Backstage every week, get indie and student film credits, do small plays etc. If all this sounds like too much effort, frankly, you're in the wrong field. Otherwise, once you've established that you really are an actor, who really wants to DO this, not just make money at it, then you can try and find an agent who will take someone with those kinds of credits. And even that's hard (though it worked for me, both in NYC and LA).
