I was just accepted to be a member of the actors project nyc. It consists of rehearsals for 3 to 4 months for an industry showcase that supposedly gets sold out. Just wondering if anyone heard of them or is a member? I don't want to get scammed especially since you have to pay them $195 for membership.

Sounds fishy. 3 or 4 months? That's a long time. You could get in front of agents and CD's over a weekend at places like Actor's Connection. I don't know much about them but you could google them and see.

They should be willing to put you in touch with actors who have been through the program.

The Actor's Project NYC approaches industry showcases as if the showcases are an Off Broadway production, requiring actors to rehearse their performance pieces and update their marketing tools before performing on an Off Broadway stage in front of industry. Past showcases have been attended by Broadway Producers, Off and Off-Off Broadway Producers, Commercial Agents, Legit Agents, Casting Directors, Press etc. Our showcases are about as diverse as showcases can be: theatrical production of monologues and scenes; comedic production of sketch-comedy, dance, music, monologues, and scenes- all original work; and we do two or more original plays each year. We have our own writers who write for our company actors and all presented work is directed by TAPNYC Artistic Director Bobby Holder. For more info as well as clips of past productions, visit www.theactorsprojectnyc.com. If accepted, membership dues are $195 for first four months (less than $50 per month); after three seasons actors have the option to become Lifetime Members, who are not required to pay dues. We have over 150 current members, so if any one needs a referral, we'd love to put you in touch with one of the 35% of our current members who are working with agents.
Best,
Bobby Holder

Sounds pretty decent. They should have lists of people who have attended too.

As I've said a whole bunch of times on these boards and on the show, the value of these "meet and greet" companies is determined by the quality of industry you can meet through them. Take a look at their website and see who has attended their showcases. If they are working in the industry, the workshop has value. If you can't find them in the Ross Reports, on IMDB or IBDB...don't bother.

And, most importantly, networking events, paid auditions, whatever you want to call them...these things can only be PART of your overall marketing strategy. And the most important thing is to be out there working. If you are doing quality work, the industry will notice. If you are not working on anything, you will not have anything to talk about with the industry you meet. Get out there and make your own way! Then you have something of substance to bring to the table at a networking facility. Hope that helps!

The Actor’s Project NYC is way more than a “meet and greet” or a “paid audition”, with over 10 acting troupes ranging from original sketch-comedy to original scenes to original monologues. Yes, membership dues produce three or more quality industry showcases, each season, featuring new actors, as well as actors with solid back grounds in theatre, film, and television, but, membership dues are also used to create resume’ workshops, writing workshops, agent workshops, and are used to produce two or more plays a year where cast members share in 60% of the profits. As for industry who have attended our productions, we have had many over the years, but here’s a recent few: Jenevieve Brewer – Aboutface with the Carson Organization, Eric Faber – Independent Artists, Anne Wright – Ann Wright Representatives, Sid Gold – Goldstar Management, Ingrid French – Ingrid French Management, Todd Miller – Casting Director Discovery, Bobby Giovanelli – Independent Casting Director, John Chatteron – producer of the Midtown International Theatre Festival, Ward Morehouse III – Broadway After Dark, etc.

Best,
Bobby Holder

Just finished interviewing Bobby Holder and my gut tells me this guy is legit. He started as an actor and has become a producer/writer/director. He's an artist like us trying to get his work out there and help other actors along the way doing showcases. The investment is low so why not give it a try. If I needed an agent. I would.
