I am new to Backstage.com. I am interested in serving as an outside director for college and high school productions while I am in grad school. How do I search for these listings?

I honestly can't figure out how to navigate the site. Everything seems to be for actors. If anyone can tell me where I can search for job listings, that would be great!

To be honest, you'll probably be better off by finding directing opportunities in person.

It's all about meeting the right people and making good impressions on them.

Everyone I know who is a director put their mind to it and directed their own thing. be it a short, a feature, a spec commercial, whatever...the first thing they did was direct their own thing, and either got it out there or used it to meet other people.

I agree with Harlemhippo. I just bit the bullet and produced and directed my first short film. It is a stepping stone.

I found I LOVE directing and was delighted to just learn the film made the festival's TOP 20 films. The jury incldues some major Hollywood producers, so it is about getting you work before them.

I probably learned more by making this short film, than a year of grad school. Not that I am against grad school, got my Ph.D., and I teach at a university now...I wish I had the time to go to film school! Enjoy and create.

Good LUCK!

Of course you can always check Craig's list, but I would start calling or stopping in to any theatre companies with teen programs/productions and high schools in your area and to see if they are hiring or at least looking for some volunteers. Yes, it will take more time to call every theater and school, but you never know:-)
