So our college is putting on Othello next quarter and I have just been informed that I have an opportunity to student direct! Great right? well here's my dilemma. This summer the director called to tell me to pick a romantic classic monologue because he is considering me for the part of Desdemona. Awesome of course. I realize it's not a guarantee but I know that's the part I'm up for. But I'm not sure (and I will talk to him first), if I can student direct and be a large part. The SD usually takes a smaller part because of the intense commitment and time it takes. If it does come to the fact where I have to choose between the two, which one do you think I should do? Desdemona would be my largest part yet, and is a dream role, but I would also like to get some sd experience before I transfer to a four year university, and I'm sure it would look great on a resume.
"I think I've still got a bit of a sado-masochistic streak in me, because if I'm not going to be restricted by corsets and covered in lace, then I still wind up wearing an ape-mask over my face. I do wonder how I get myself in these situations! "-Helena Bonham Carter

I would take Desdemona in a hearbeat. You are an actor, right? So ACT. That would look amazing an a resume and would help you gain experience like nothing else. You CANNOT direct and play Desdemona. That role is probably the most challenging role available to women out there. It will require you heart, your soul, your complete undivided attention but what an incredible opoprtunity. No way would I pass on such a chance. No way.

If you get the chance, I'd take the larger, more challenging role. You can always SD later on another show. I SD'd once in school and was happy that I wasn't performing in the show as well.
