Hello. I am graduating with a B.A. in Theatre from a university in the midwest. I recently attended my first season general audition with a professional theatre in my home state.
I was wondering what is the likelihood of LORT theatres casting non-equity actors in their productions. This theatre allowed non-equity actors to audition. I didn't know if this was just something Equity requires them to do or if they really do hire non-equity.

IN general, they will hire whoever they like best for the role. I don't know what the LORT rules are, but in general, the answer is always "it depends." Depends on that decision maker's personal rules as much as the letter of the law. Some directors may prefer Equity talent or may have a personal rule against hiring non-eq. Every theater, every person, etc is different. If I were you, I'd try to find someone who has worked there and ask them. Good luck!
