I need your help! My best friend just asked this question on an advice column (http://www.wetv.com/blogs/love-letters/2008/11/is-stage-sex-cheating.html) She doesn't understand that "Amy vs. John" is supposed to be funny so now she's about to quit her lead role in a great play in Chicago. Please leave real actors' advice in comments about how to deal with jealous boyfriends when you have to kiss on stage. She's shooting her career in the foot!! Help!

Have her assure her boyfriend that this is simply a part of her job.

If possible, don't have him attend any performance that requires a lot of love scenes (out of sight, out of mind).

If he can't handle it, tell her to get another boyfriend.

Jealousy simply doesn't work, no matter what occupation you're in.

her boyfriends insecurities have caused her to leave what could be a great opportunity. Tell him to grow up or her to get single and do what she wants. Life is too short to be controlled by an insecure jealous boyfriend who can't separate fact from fiction.

Mmm... sorry, but I can't say Amy vs. John was completely off the mark. On stage nudity and intamacy are a big deal. Like it or not, it can and does affect a couple that is committed and manogamous. It is also is a big deal from a career perspective. It affects how you are perceived in the industry. Check out these articles:

This a very personal issue for me. I think that actors are more and more expected to behave like porn stars (esp on some cable shows) and we fall right in line. It really freaks me out. It's just a job? Well... there are some other professions out there that use that logic... right?

Amy and John were not at all sympathetic to the life and career of an actor, which anyone involved in a serious relationship with a serious actor needs to be. It doesn't make anyone a bad guy. Not wanting your partner to strip in public is not unreasonable. If it was just a kiss it would be easier to say "stop trippin". But it's going a bit further than that.

How great is this role? Is it going to bring out the industry? Your friend already committed to the role, so I guess the chips will fall where they may. This guy may not be right for her, but I don't think he's just being a jealous idiot either.

Having a jealous boyfriend (or girlfriend) will cause so many problems and missed opportunities. It's sometimes hard for civilians to understand.

He needs to get over it, and if he can't he needs to go. Or she needs to pick a different career if she cares about him enough to sacrifice everything.

Everyone should read the post at the is-stage-sex-cheating URL, especially some of those that already replied about dumping the jealous boyfriend. This isn't a simple stage kiss, it's simulated sex, nudity, and lots of stage kisses. I'm pretty open minded, but I think I'd be more than a bit uncomfortable if it were my wife or girlfriend playing this part.

Both the the people that replied on the original advice column were skeptical about the part.

Personally, I'd simply ask if this part were more important than the boyfriend, because that seems to be the choice that's at hand.
