I have to get new headshots but the photographer I'm working with dosen't provide a hair/make up person.

I have really curly hair and want to do a straight look then a curly look. Will go from straight to curly. I don't trust myself trying to attempt this on my own! So does anyone know any great hair/make-up artists, who are pretty reasonable? I'm pretty good with the make-up, really just need someone for the hair.

The shoot will be taking place in NYC hopefully sometime in mid-June. If you know someone PM me or write on the wall.

You've heard me say many times: "JUST BECAUSE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER OWNS A CAMERA DOESN'T MEAN HE IS A PROFESSIONAL."

This sounds like a photographer who is not experienced with professional makeup and hair styling, a very common occurence when using lower-priced or "bargain basement" photographers. Would you go to a dentist who didn't have an assistant? Or have major surgery with a doctor who didn't have a nurse? You could be saving money this way, but throwing away your career.

Contact my studio and just ask for my assistant, 'Melvin.' He will be happy to assist you with several top hair stylists.

you may want to consider going to a salon and getting japanese hair straightening. if you are getting shots done with straight hair, you will always need to have straight hair when you go to auditions. so you may just want to look into something permanent.

but since you say you are looking for both, you will actually want to start curly then go straight, since that is easier and will capture your natural curls as opposed to curling iron curls.

i have a friend with extremely curly hair who also did curly and straight. her photog is no longer in NYC, but i bet the HMUA is. i'll email her and ask!

I will need to get a top-notch person for hair AND makeup as well for a public event.

Does anyone happen to know the going rate for a great hair and makeup person?

When I left NYC, it was still in the $150-$175 range.

The person I referred to in my post above does BOTH hair and makeup. She's one of my favorite people in the world and extremely talented. The price range you cite looks about right, but it all depends on the person and how busy they are.

Humph. The photographer has no suggestions of who they like working with. that scares me. Beware.

Don't do your own make up for a photo shoot. Unless you are a pro make up artist.

I have someone that I love to work with. She does not do hair. I can PM you if you are interested.
